History of the Storz coupling
The Storz coupling was invented in 1882 by Carl August Guido Storz to provide a simple, symmetrical, quick-connecting alternative to traditional threaded hose couplings. Patented in Switzerland in 1890, its “sexless” design—where any two couplings of the same size can be connected—made it highly efficient for firefighting, irrigation, and industrial applications
Design advantages
- Fast and easy connection: Storz couplings require only a quarter-turn to form a watertight seal, significantly reducing connection time compared to multiple rotations needed for threaded fittings.
- No male/female mismatch: The symmetrical, “sexless” design prevents the problem of mismatched couplings that often occurred with traditional threaded fittings.
- Interoperability: Once a standard size is adopted, all Storz couplings of that size are interchangeable, improving consistency across different fire departments and regions.
- Durability: Originally cast, Storz couplings for firefighting are now often forged for greater strength. They are also available in robust materials like aluminium and brass for industrial use.
